"Jouissance” is a new single from Harvey Sutherland - nom de funk for the Melbourne-based producer and bandleader Mike Katz. A naggingly groovy mix of analogue synths and motorik rhythms, it’s the first manifestation of what Katz wryly calls ‘neurotic funk’, and takes its name from a term coined by the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan.
“I learned the word from my therapist,” says Katz. “there’s no easy English translation, but it’s the itch that demands scratching, a masochistic desire.” The term seemed to speak to Katz’s musical process – a congenital perfectionist and overthinker doing his utmost to get louche and loose. For me it represents an obsessional energy, a frustration in finding the funk,” he laughs. “It’s about acknowledging my shortcomings along the way.”
Includes the fizzing, half-stepping On-U Sound Version from legendary UK producer, reggae archivist, dub-punk pioneer and #1 Dub Dad Adrian Sherwood.

Ever since this came across and I took a chance on its intrigue, this has been one of those albums I knew I would absolutely be owning forever. It's such a mesmerizing, cohesive piece and once the symphony steps in, it becomes utterly transcendent. It's one of the best pure pieces of music I've ever heard. I hope one day to hear a live performance, even if it's local musicians and a symphony, just to hear it in that space. giventofly87
